Follow-up to the TV Documentary (moving the discussion) [May. 25th, 2006|12:55 pm]
The Official Anime Vegas Live Journal Community!

Okay, so everywhere I've posted around the Internet I've received nothing but good replies. So now it's time to really get this show on the road!

So as to no longer flood this community, I'm moving all further discussion of the Anime Fans documentary to my LJ community, marzgurlprod. So either join the community or put a watch on it for further updates. Also, if you'd like to join in on further discussion (and this will probably be where you'll find more updates) I'd also recommend joining the MarzGurl Productions forum and checking out the section New Documentary, Working Title: Project Fandom. We'll be setting up interviews there.

Also, to anyone who posted interest in becoming involved, I'll try to add you to an e-mail list. Just respond to it with "Please Remove" in the subject if you no longer wish to be notified.

One last thing - to those of you outside of the state of Texas, please watch one of the places I've posted above so that you will be notified of how to submit your interviews, where to get the forms you'll need to sign, and so on.

Thanks for your support, everyone! I'll be leaving now, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Anime fans! Join MarzGurl Productions on TV! [May. 24th, 2006|01:53 pm]
The Official Anime Vegas Live Journal Community!

Hello, everyone! I'm considering tackling a whole new project, and I was wondering if there was anyone out there who wanted to help.

I have a desire to submit a new video to Current TV (http://www.current.tv). I was considering submitting some of my anime convention videos, but if Current ended up liking my work they would want to purchase the distribution rights to the video, and then the video would no longer really be mine to show, and I am not willing to sell my free convention videos to anyone. Because of this, I would like to create a whole new documentary.

You've seen other "Otaku Documentaries" floating around, but don't they sometimes seem a little... well... off? Some of them seemed to want to focus on just how freakish some fans can be, diving too far deep into subjects such as crossplay and shedding an uncomfortable light on the subject. Wouldn't we all like to see someone make a mini-documentary about how much fun our fandom can really be? That's exactly what I intend to do.

I want to cover as many aspects of fandom as I possibly can. I want to go from your casual fan who watches and enjoys Cartoon Network animes and collects small amounts of mangas and DVDs to model creators, to big-time collectors to convention attendees, to cosplayers, and all walks of anime fandom here in the States (okay, you Canadians can join, too).

I want to interview as many people as possible! If you have a way of expressing your fandom that you'd like to share with MarzGurl Productions and the world, I want you to let me know! I live in San Antonio, Texas, so if you live in the state of Texas then I would like to make my way out to see some of you or sit down and talk to you about your opinions, your fandom, and anything you're proud of.

Now, even if you don't live in the state of Texas, I still want to try to include you. If you're an anime fan with a video camera you can still show me your fandom! You may want to get a second person as a cameraman and film you alongside your fandom for you. If there is enough interest shown in this I will later post some interview questions that you can ask each other and tell you exactly how I'd like for you to show me your fandom.

I am especially interested in cosplayers and crossplayers, from the casual to the detailed. In no way will I aim to hurt the character of anyone interviewed, so on that note, you can feel safe and secure from my end. You can show off your hard work!

The same goes for any artist in any medium. If you draw fan art, I'd like to hear about that, too, so get in contact with me so that we might share your work with the world.

And finally, I will be looking for anyone who creates unlicensed music and is willing to share that music with this video. All I would need is your permission and a signature from you, and I would be agreeing that the work is, in fact, yours, giving you your full rights to it, you've just allowed me to use it. If there's anyone who wants to get their music heard, or if you know of anyone who might like to get their unlicensed music heard, please come in my direction, and I'd like to work with you!

Please remember that the eventual outcome we are aiming for is to get this aired on television, so if that makes you feel uncomfortable in any way you do not have to get involved. If at any time any questions are asked of you that would make you feel uncomfortable you have every right not to answer those questions. Also, everything will be done completely legally. Everyone interviewed will be required to give a signature saying that you are allowing us to use that footage of you in the video and such. If you are under the age of 18 we will be requiring a parent/guardian signature.

So! With all that said, is there anyone who is interested in helping me accomplish this goal!? Again, the kind of people we are looking for includes:

TV fans
Manga and DVD collectors
Model artists/collectors
Fan artists
Fan subbers
Unlicensed musicians
Fans with opinions to be heard
Anyone else with a unique way of showing their fandom all their own!

Please leave a reply here or send me an e-mail at marzgurl@marzgurlproductions.com .

Thank you, and keep on being the awesome fans that you are!

We're not dead yet! [May. 18th, 2006|06:11 am]
The Official Anime Vegas Live Journal Community!
Hi cats and kittens!
Just dropping by to let you know that while the staff has been ultra quiet on the con front.. the convention is gearing up to be very cool this year! We're not really looking to get bigger than last year, but definately better and try some different things so keep your ears open and watch for our Con commercials which should start airing in the next couple of months..as well as check your emails for news from the Animevegas staff on new events and happenings planned at AVC06!

Oh yeah, and a BIG website update is coming very soon. Let us know what things you would like to see on the site or what things you would like to see at the con by joining our official forums which can be found as a link on http://www.animevegas.com or you can directly go to them via http://www.lasvegasotaku.org.

Seeya around!

Yes, I'm pimping it out again :P [Apr. 16th, 2006|10:10 am]

I'm posting this for the benefit of people who didn't see fliers yesterday.

If you like dancing, cosplay, and Sailor Moon, you should apply for Moonlight Justice! We will be performing routines from the Sailor Moon Musicals at Anime Vegas 2006. Anyone over 18 with a sense of rhythm and a professional work ethic is welcome to join. Villains and senshi are both needed!

I should also mention that I'm trying to keep the cast limited to people in the Las Vegas/Henderson area. Not having people spread about the country means that our choreography can be more ambitious.

So, if you have any questions or comments about a monthly screening, or anything else feel free to stop on by and drop Rich and the rest of the staff a line!

Thanks for reading, and seeya on the boards!

A few things. . . [Feb. 5th, 2006|10:20 am]

[mood |draineddrained]

I updated the info. WOW, was that out of date! Now the new dates for this year are in the info.

BTW, for those who haven't checked the main website in the past week, the dates are September 2-4, 2006. That's Labor Day Weekend, so those dates are a Saturday through Monday, not Friday through Sunday.

lvganguro, do you want me to put a link to LVO on the info page? If so, write me a little paragraph about your group so that people know more about it :). Also, does Omar have a website for Chibi Club? I'd like to link to that too.

Hey all! I just found this community. I just moved to Vegas from Iowa, so I want to get to know my new hometown con. This was also my first west coast con. All in all it was pretty cool, I got a few complaints here and there. But it was mostly minor and I'm really excited about this years....Yep, that's about it...

Otakon's Stiring Up Trouble with Artists [Jan. 29th, 2006|07:12 pm]
The Official Anime Vegas Live Journal Community!
Oh, Otakon, I know you are the largest Anime Con in country, so I guess its about time you do something like this. As an artist I am pissed... but as a Staff Member of Anime Vegas... my comments are unwillingly cautious. I don't want Anime Vegas to get in trouble for what I say, because we appear to be so close. So if anybody with Otakon reads this and has a problem with MY opinion, you bring it up with ME, not Anime Vegas. So here is what was posted on Otakon's forums... I got this via Anime News Network.

Otakon's Artists Alley will be actively disallowing the sale of unlicensed copyrighted materials. If you own it, you can sell it. If you have license to it, you can sell it. But if it has material (images, sounds, etc.), in whole or in part, to which you DO NOT have permission to sell, then that material will not be allowed in the Artists Alley. Anyone found in violation of this rule loses their retail space in Artists Alley for the remainder of the convention. (The above statement will be officially/legally worded and posted on the site during February, after our lawyer and Otakorp President have approved it.)

5b. Policy for the DISPLAY of unlicensed copyrighted material - provided it is NOT FOR SALE - is currently under review.

Works of parody, for which the U.S. legal code permits fair use exemptions to copyright, may be permitted. These will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

Oh Otakon, I see what you might be trying to do. However, you are alienating the fan artists when you are trying to possibly target the bootleggers. Granted, I don't have a high opinion of those people who strictly only do fanart... if you are a real artist you can make your own characters and products and original things. However, fan-made products (doujinshi, whatever) they are things that keep series alive, even when its long ended and left the spotlight. You can't ban that sort of stuff. Anyway, at last check it seems as though Otakon is trying to do some kind of cleanup and they're running around saying that this statement is not their official one, despite the thread being titled Offical Otakon Artist Alley Rule Change... Discuss amongst your self.

From the Cosplay Department, THANK YOU ALL!

The Masquerade (with the exception of a technical difficulty) went really well! Everyone, staff and participants alike, worked incredibly hard -- and I'm very happy about that :).

I only wish I could have been in the convention center on Saturday. I was holed up in the theatre all day, and I'm sure I missed some really good costumes ;_;.

So thank you again! I'll post the winners of the contest on the site pretty soon ^^.
